Settle

Enabling an award-winning charity to retain staff and attract new talent by creating a career progression and pay framework.

Settle

An award-winning charity tackling homelessness.

Settle was established in 2015 and has grown into an award-winning charity that supports young people as they move into their first homes from the care system. The work they do is transformative for young people, enabling them to build a stable life

Why did Settle approach us?

We were approached by Settle in late 2020 after the team had organically grown to 12 members.

Settle intended to keep growing which is why they sought our expertise to formalise their career development process and create opportunities for salary progression. By doing this they hoped to attract and retain talented employees.

How we worked with Settle?

We proposed that Settle provide the team with an opportunity to progress both in their career and pay within their existing job role through the creation of a salary banding structure.

We created three possible salary bands for each role based on the achievement of competencies for the role.

When creating the pay scales, we wanted to ensure Settle remained attractive to its existing team and potential candidates, so we carried out a salary benchmarking exercise, collating salary data from key competitors to make thoughtful recommendations for Settle’s pay scale

Then to enable the charity to assess the competency of its existing team and implement a process for management performance, we designed and implemented its performance appraisal process.

The Result

When they approached us, Settle was concerned about their ability to create pay and progression opportunities as a small charity. However, with our expertise, we were able to achieve their desired results.

By creating opportunities for the team to advance within their existing role, we encouraged knowledge and competency development in exchange for the team being rewarded for their increased contribution to the charity.

The introduction of clearly defined salary bands based on qualifications, knowledge and experience provided flexibility with starting salaries when recruiting candidates externally making Settle an attractive place to work for talented candidates.

After this project was completed we continued to work with Settle on a Pay As You Go basis to maintain this framework and to support other ad-hoc HR issues.

“We were incredibly pleased with the outcome of this project. PMP took the time to understand our needs, values and priorities and designed a pay and progression framework that has worked extremely well. This has directly helped us to improve our staff retention by offering progression as well as enabling us to attract new talent in the organisation”
